heritage
Description
Site/building/object registered by an official heritage organisation Show/edit corresponding data item.
Group: historic
Used on these elements
may be used on nodesmay be used on waysmay be used on areas (and multipolygon relations)may be used on relations
Useful combination
Status: de factoPage for proposal

heritage=* should be used on geographical, permanent objects : sites, areas, buildings, parts of buildings, fixed sculpture, fresco. They can't be used on a non static object (heritage steam locomotives still in use...).

How to map

Case: a single object e.g. a building is under protection

Add to the object: heritage=*, heritage:operator=xxx, ref:xxx=* and more see table.

  1. Create a Relation:siterelation by tagging type=site.
  2. Add heritage=*. (site:type=heritage was previously suggested here, but this is non-conformal with the standard site=* used in site=parking. It may not be necessary in the first place when heritage=* is already used, when comparing with the practice in power=plant.).
  3. Further attributes heritage:operator=xxx, ref:xxx=*, and more see table.
  4. All objects are added as a membermember.

Example relation 3377386

Case: a simple area is under protection e.g. Old town, Whole settlement, Nature reserve

Draw the shape of the area and add:

An older approach relies on arbitrarily chosen numeric values of protect_class=*:

Example

  1. Create a Relation:multipolygon relation by tagging type=multipolygon.
  2. Add heritage=*.
  3. Further attributes heritage:operator=xxx, ref:xxx=*, and more see table.
  4. All areas (outlines and inner holes) are added as a member member.

An older approach relies on arbitrarily chosen numeric values of protect_class=*:

Example

Case: more spatially separate objects are under protection

Treat them as individual objects, each with the same characteristics.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

National monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina are declared and registered by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina KONS (official website: kons.gov.ba) (in Serbo-Croatian: Komisija za očuvanje nacionalnih spomenika Bosne i Hercegovine KONS), a state-level institution (commission, agency) established on December 21, 2001. Declared national monuments include sites, natural/urban/architectural assembles, as well as immovable and movable heritage of historical and cultural importance to Bosnia and Herzegovina.[5][6]

The Commission (KONS) issues its decisions to declare cultural property a National Monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina during sessions held in accordance to Article V paragraph 4 of Annex 8 of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Article 39 paragraph 1 of the Rules of Procedure of the Commission.

Sites of exclusively natural heritage do not fall under the mandate of Annex 8 or the Commission.

The Commission's old website (old.kons.gov.ba), which is currently offline, previously served as an online documentation archive.

The abbreviation: KONS (or kons for usage in the OSM project) stands for the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, derived from its Serbo-Croatian name: Komisija za očuvanje nacionalnih spomenika Bosne i Hercegovine KONS.

name=* name:sr=* name:sr-Latn=* * Name, according to the naming scheme in Serbia
heritage:operator=* * Operator (abbreviation) of the heritage (note that institution in charge of protection does not have to be operator too (and usually it is not)

heritage:website=* https://... Website dedicated to the heritage
heritage:RS:inscription_date=* YYYY-MM-DD Date when the object was added to the preservation list for Serbian National Heritage preservation.
Institutions in Serbia in charge of protection

If any additional entity is recorded in the heritage data (e.g. operator) it must be added to the official list and assigned a unique abbreviation.

Institution should be designated as operator (heritage:operator=*) if and only if they serve as the actual operating entity. The operator is the party responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the property. This may differ from the owner or the governing body; for example, the operator could be a museum, a private foundation, or another specific institution currently managing the site.

Groups

Heritage monuments are categorized into four groups, each utilizing a specific reference ID scheme distinguished by its prefix. These references must be recorded using the tag ref:RS:nkd=*.

Original IDs containing Cyrillic characters must be converted to the Latin ones as shown in the example below:

СК -> SK (Example: СК 12 -> CK 12)

ЗМ -> ZM

АН -> AN

ПКИС -> PKIC

Note that in original document reference ID, after letter comes one or more spaces and then numbers. Remove all spaces when entering reference data into OSM.

  • Monument of Culture / Spomenik kulture
  • Landmark / Znamenito mesto
  • Archeological site / Arheološko nalazište
  • Spatial Cultural-Historical Unit / Prostorna kulturno-istorijska celina
Categories

Some monuments are also categorized in two categories that should be tagged using heritage:RS:criteria=*. Possible values are:

- exceptional - Immovable Cultural Property of Exceptional Importance

- great - Immovable Cultural Property of Great Importance

Not all monuments belong to these categories. For those [[Key:|]]=heritage:RS:criteria should not be set.

Data may be found at http://editor.osmsrbija.iz.rs/?dataset=srbija%2Fnepokretna-kulturna-dobra as column 'importance'.

Spain

Cultural heritage protection in Spain is governed by state and autonomous-community legislation. Record the verified legal designation in protection_title=* and use the reference key for the register that issued the identifier. An asset may have references in several registers. The numerical values of heritage=* below describe OSM tagging conventions for particular schemes. Use heritage=yes if the asset's heritage status is verified and the applicable OSM level is unclear.

Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC)

protection_title=Bien de Interés Cultural identifies an asset with BIC status. Law 16/1985 provides the state framework. Autonomous communities generally make declarations within their competence, while the State does so in the cases reserved to it. Some assets have BIC status by operation of law.[15]

  • heritage=2 is the documented convention for BICs. The BIC Spain preset uses heritage:operator=ipce for this scheme. That value is an OSM convention and does not identify the authority that declared each asset.
  • ref:bic=* records the verified identifier from the General Register of BICs. Use the Ministry of Culture's register search or another official source that gives the same identifier. Regional catalogue references can be recorded alongside it under their own keys.
  • related_law=* and related_law:url=* can identify the declaration or other legal instrument. heritage:website=* can link to the asset's catalogue entry. Use historic=* and other feature tags according to what the object represents, for example historic=castle for a castle whose legal BIC category is Monumento.
Bien de Interés Patrimonial (BIP)

protection_title=Bien de Interés Patrimonial identifies a designation under autonomous-community law. The designation is in force in Castilla-La Mancha under Law 4/2013 and in the Community of Madrid under Law 8/2023.[16][17] Andalusia's Law 4/2026 introduces BIP status from 7 April 2027, including for assets entered under catalogación general in the former General Catalogue at the time the law takes effect.[18]

Check the legal status of the specific asset, distinguishing a final designation from a pending procedure (incoación) with provisional protection. Use the applicable regional reference key. ref:bic=* is for the BIC register identifier.

Regional designations and inventories

Andalusia. ref:iaph=* identifies a record in the IAPH Digital Guide. The IAPH tagging scheme documents heritage=4 with heritage:operator=iaph. Check legal status separately in the official register or declaration. An IAPH identifier and a BIC register identifier can both be recorded when available.

Castilla-La Mancha. Use heritage:operator=jccm and ref:ES:ipcclm=* where the inventory identifier is known. The regional scheme uses heritage=2 for BIC, heritage=3 for BIP and EIP, heritage=4 for other assets in the Inventory without an individual designation, and heritage=5 for entornos de protección, ámbitos de protección and ámbitos de prevención. See the Castilla-La Mancha heritage mapping guide (in Spanish).

Catalonia. The regional designations include bé cultural d'interès nacional (BCIN) and bé cultural d'interès local (BCIL).[19] ref:ipac=* identifies an architectural inventory entry. The designation references documented there are ref:ipac:bcin and ref:ipac:bcil. The Catalan scheme documents heritage=2 for a BCIN also registered as a BIC, heritage=4 for a BCIN without a state BIC entry, and heritage=7 or heritage=8 for BCIL according to whether the county council or municipality made the declaration. Check the designation separately from the IPAC entry.

Community of Madrid. Law 8/2023 distinguishes BIC, BIP and Bien Catalogado. The regional open-data portal publishes separate datasets for immovable BICs and BIPs. Check the specific declaration or register entry for the applicable status.

Other regional designations include Bien de Interés Local in Cantabria, Bien de Relevancia Local in the Valencian Community, Bien Inventariado in Castile and León, Bien Catalogado in Galicia, and protección especial, media and básica in the Basque Country. Use the verified title and follow the local tagging convention where one is documented.[20]

Designated areas and protection settings

When the designated extent differs materially from the physical feature, map the legal perimeter separately. A documented protection setting (entorno de protección) can be mapped as a separate area with protection_title=Entorno de protección, boundary=protected_area and protect_class=22. Follow the official delimitation, including any exclusions. Use the setting's own register identifier where one has been assigned.
