Το κλειδί surface χρησιμοποιείται για την παροχή πρόσθετων πληροφοριών σχετικά με τη φυσική επιφάνεια των δρόμων/πεζοδρομίων και ορισμένων άλλων χαρακτηριστικών, ιδίως όσον αφορά τη σύνθεση ή/και τη δομή του υλικού. Αρχικά αφορούσε την επιφάνεια σε σχέση με τις μεταφορές και τα αθλήματα και χρησιμοποιούνταν συχνότερα σε γραμμικά χαρακτηριστικά, αλλά τώρα χρησιμοποιείται όλο και περισσότερο σε ορισμένες περιοχές του τύπου natural=*. Για τους δρόμους για μηχανοκίνητα οχήματα υπάρχει συνήθως η παραδοχή ότι η επιφάνεια είναι surface=paved εκτός αν αναφέρεται διαφορετικά. Η ένδειξη «paved» (στρωμένος) στο OpenStreetMap δεν είναι συγκεκριμένη και καλύπτει δρόμους που είναι στρωμένοι με άσφαλτο, πίσσα, τσιμέντο ή άλλα στεγανά υλικά. Το surface=unpaved αντιμετωπίζεται ως το αντίθετο του στρωμένου. Πιο συγκεκριμένες ετικέτες μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν για επιφάνειες που συνήθως ταξινομούνται ως στρωμένες ή μη στρωμένες για σκοπούς δρομολόγησης. Το λογισμικό πλοήγησης θα πρέπει να υποθέτει ότι μη στρωμένες οδοί θα επιτρέπουν χαμηλότερη ταχύτητα (και συνεπώς μεγαλύτερο χρόνο οδήγησης) και μπορεί να είναι αδιάβατοι σε ορισμένες καιρικές συνθήκες.
Η ετικέτα smoothness=* είναι επίσης σημαντική ιδιότητα επιφάνειας και αναφέρεται στην κανονικότητα/επιπεδότητα της επιφάνειας, ανεξαρτήτως υλικού. Μπορεί να είναι ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμη για πατίνια και παρόμοιες χρήσεις.
Η ετικέτα tracktype=* επίσης είναι μια σημαντική ιδιότητα επιφάνειας και αναφέρεται στην σταθερότητα της επιφάνειας, ανεξαρτήτως σχήματος.
Οι διαδρομές highway=* ιδανικά θα πρέπει πάντα να ταγκάρονται με την επιφάνειά τους (ή/και το tracktype=*), αν δεν υπάρχει προεπιλογή για αυτές τις διαδρομές.
Οι συμβάσεις των λογισμικών απεικόνισης ποικίλλουν, αλλά γενικά οι δρόμοι που δεν είναι στρωμένοι απεικονίζονται με διαφορετικό χρώμα αλλά το ίδιο πλάτος με τα στρωμένα αδέλφια τους ή με το ίδιο χρώμα αλλά με διακεκομμένη γραμμή. Η Απεικόνιση του οδοστρώματος σε τυπικό στυλ OSM είναι ένα περίπλοκο θέμα.
Σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις, όταν οι άλλες ετικέτες δεν επαρκούν για να περιγράψουν αρκετά καλά τις οδικές συνθήκες, μπορεί να ληφθεί υπόψη η χρήση των smoothness=* και maxspeed:practical=*. Η ετικέτα maxspeed:practical=* μπορεί να είναι χρήσιμη σε περιπτώσεις όπου άλλες ετικέτες δεν επαρκούν για να περιγράψουν την αναμενόμενη ταχύτητα. Εάν υπάρχει ένας καλός δρόμος surface=unpaved, όπου η πρακτική ταχύτητα είναι 60 χλμ/ω, και ένας δεύτερος κακός δρόμος με επιφάνεια concrete:lanes που επιτρέπει πρακτική ταχύτητα 10 χλμ/ω, οι χρήστες ή τα λογισμικά δρομολόγησης θα μπορούσαν να οδηγηθούν λανθασμένα στην επιλογή του δεύτερου δρόμου για δρομολόγηση, επειδή από προεπιλογή οι στρωμένοι δρόμοι θεωρείται ότι επιτρέπουν πολύ υψηλότερες ταχύτητες από τους μη στρωμένους.
