A bus station consists of several bus stops, usually allowing people to travel in many different directions.

A highway=bus_stop would be a place on a particular bus route where the bus regularly stops to pick up / drop off passengers. An amenity=bus_station would usually be a terminus where many routes stop / start, and where you can change between routes, etc.

For the platforms in a bus station see highway=platform

For the station there is also another tag: public_transport=station which can be used for trams and trains as well (this scheme is newer, but less common). Consider adding both tags.
