Status: de facto

A cycle track is separated from the road by curbs, parking lots, grass verges, trees or another physical barrier, but is running parallel to and next to the road.

Alternatively, this kind of object may be mapped as a separate way and tagged as highway=cycleway, or as highway=path+bicycle=designated.

How to map

Add to a road highway=* the tag cycleway=track.

If there is only one cycle track add:

cycleway:right=track
bicycle track only right (direction of the ways of OSM)
cycleway:left=track
bicycle track only left

If there is only one cycle track, but it is designated to be used in both directions, add cycleway:right:oneway=no or cycleway:left:oneway=no respectively.

One-way roads

Use cycleway:right=track (respectively cycleway:left=track for countries with left-hand traffic)

For a cycle track operating in the opposite direction to a one-way road, instead use cycleway=opposite_track + oneway:bicycle=no.

Do not use cycleway=track + highway=cycleway

Popular[1] cycleway=track + highway=cycleway combinations is a result of bug in Potlatch[2]. This combination is recommended to be converted into highway=cycleway by JOSM[3] and iD[4]

Older tagging schemes

Note that cycleway=track is also often used there the is track on just one side.
