Railroad organized projects (Beta Project Listing)

Here are projects above listed out under each railroad or railroad owner. Listings for Open Historical Map will also be included.

Class I Railroads

These are the major owners / operators of rail in the USA (and some markets in Canada). Along with its subsidiary Kansas City Southern de Mexico SA de CV (KCSM) and a pending (2021-Q3) merger with Canadian Pacific, the KS merger, if completed, would create the first tri-national railroad in North America.

  • Amtrak (primarily passenger rail)
  • BNSF Railway, also known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF)
  • CSX Transportation (CSX)
  • Kansas City Southern Railway (KS). KS is in merger with CP but is good for listing in a Class I list.
  • Norfolk Southern Railway (NS)
  • Union Pacific Railroad (UP)
  • Canadian Pacific Railroad (CP)
  • Canadian National Railway (CN)

Class II Regional Railroads

  • Montana Rail Link

Class III and Terminal Railroads

Note that most railroads here will be better found in State/Commonwealth listings.

Holding Companies

This is a listing of parent company as railroad owners.

  • Genesee and Wyoming (a dominant player in many markets, for example, almost 80% of the Class III rail in California is G&W line, held in six statewide railroads out of the dozens that G&W owns or "holds")
  • RJ Corman
  • Progressive Rail (based in Lakeville, Minnesota)
  • Omnitrax
  • Railmark Holdings
  • Anacostia
  • Watco

Use railway=rail on rails for full sized passenger or freight trains in the typical gauge of the country or state.

railway=rail is the largest railway classification, for full-blown full-sized railways. For smaller railway classifications such as subways/trams/monorails, preserved lines, and other railway related tagging see railway=*
