Country-specific information

Belgium

Belgium law includes this concept (fietsstraat / rue cyclable) since February 2012. Such streets are delimited with road signs:

  • F111 Belgian road sign F111.svgBelgium-trafficsign-f111-fr.svg at the start
  • F113 Belgian road sign F113.svgBelgium-trafficsign-f113.svg at the end
  • Note: the text 'fietsstraat' or 'rue cyclable' is optional.

Its implications are the following:

  • Bicycles can use the entire width of the tracks designated for their driving direction
  • Speed limit is 30 km/h at most (but additional road signs could impose a lower value)
  • Motor vehicles are prohibited from overtaking cyclists.

Current tagging policy is to NOT alter the highway category (leave it 'as is', based on its relevance within the routable network), but to add a key cyclestreet=yes to indicate its legal status.

Netherlands

Cyclestreet in the Netherlands with road sign L51

In the Netherlands this concept (fietsstraat) does not have a legal status as such, but in recent years an increasing number of municipalities have applied the concept. The idea is that motor vehicles (voluntarily) behave themselves as guests on roads marked as fietsstraat, where cyclists are considered the primary users. The fietsstraat concept mainly tends to be applied to roads below the level of collector road in residential areas, and streets with parking and residential access that run parallel to arterial roads (in Dutch: ventweg).

These fietsstraat cyclestreets are signed by road sign L51, as shown in the picture on the right. Historically, this sign was also called L1002.

Often, when applied to newly resurfaced asphalt-topped streets, the road surface uses the same red colour used for bicycle lanes in the Netherlands.

Rendering

In the Bicycle tags map cyclestreets are rendered as a pink line.
