Le tag highway est le tag principal utilisé pour les routes. C'est d'ailleurs souvent le seul tag appliqué à une voie. C'est une description générale et parfois assez vague de l'importance et la structure physique de la route.

Bien qu'il ne soit pas aussi spécifique que les autres tags, il est très utile car il donne une idée de l'importance d'une route au premier coup d'oeil. Cela permet de représenter immédiatement la route sur la carte en attendant que de plus amples données aient été collectées. De plus, de nombreux autres tags et leurs valeurs peuvent être déduits de la valeur du tag highway. En cela, les autres tags appliqués à la route ainsi que la localisation de celle-ci peuvent également aider, réduisant d'autant plus la quantité de données à entrer.

Bien que les valeurs du tag highway soient issues de la classification des routes en Grande-Bretagne, elles ont pour but de donner une idée générale de l'importance de la route et de son aspect physique, la classification de celle-ci n'étant pas réellement utile. Trois bonnes raisons à cela :

On suppose que l'utilisateur souhaite connaitre l'aspect physique de la route. Un conducteur sera plus enclin à vouloir savoir si la route a une ou quatre voies et si c'est un axe important plutôt que son mode de financement.
Cela permet d'appliquer le même type de valeurs à des types de routes similaires dans des pays différents sans tenir compte des classifications routières des pays en questions. Par exemple une Autobahn en Allemagne, une US Interstate aux Etats-Unis et une Autoroute en France auront toutes la valeur motorway pour le tag highway.
Il est plus rapide de déterminer le type de route par son importance (trafic, utilisation) et son aspect physique que par sa classification ou son mode de financement. Si une portion de route aux Etats-Unis ressemble à une autoroute et semble en avoir l'importance, elle pourra être tagguée comme motorway sans avoir à rechercher un panneau faisant état de sa classification.

Les nationales récemment déclassées en France sont un bon exemple de routes dont le tag highway diffère de la classification. En effet, elles gardent leur valeur primary car elles n'ont pas changé physiquement, elles sont toujours utilisées de la même façon donc leur importance n'a pas changé.

Exceptions aux attributs physiques

Dans certains pays, d'autres attributs que l'aspect physique rentrent en compte pour déterminer la valeur du tag highway. En particulier dans le cas où une petite route est attendue d'être rendu à un niveau de zoom elevé.

En Islande par exemple, la route la plus importante du pays est une simple voie à double sens qui par endroits peut devenir plus étroite et peut ne plus être goudronnée. C'est pourtant une route de type primary même si les portions sans asphalte sont marquées comme telles.

Le tag highway et les droits d'accès

Bien que certaines valeurs du tag highway implique le type de trafic de la route, il faut également utiliser des tags spécifiques pour préciser quels sont les types de trafics qui sont autorisés ou tolérés sur la route en question.

Itinéraires routiers.

La valeur de la clé highway ne doit pas dépendre d'un itinéraire routier. Dans de nombreux pays, une section particulière d'une route peut faire partie de plusieurs itinéraires ou réseaux routiers et un itinéraire particulier peut avoir plusieurs sections avec différents attributs et ainsi différents tags highway. Pour la France, ce point concerne par exemple les références de routes (D1, N7, etc) : une même départementale peut avoir des sections en trunk, d'autres sections en primary ou encore secondary, suivant le nombre de voies, la largeur et l'importance du trafic.

Le tag highway =* est le tag principal pour toutes les voies de circulation terrestre. C'est le minimum pour voir apparaître ce type de voies sur une carte. Les conventions peuvent différer d'un pays à l'autre. Pour la France, cf. FR:France roads tagging.
