Getting started
If you're new to mapping in OpenStreetMap, consult this comprehensive rundown of common features and how to tag them. These local tagging guidelines provide more details about features and conventions specific to the United States. More specific guidance and resources are available on state- and city-specific pages:
If you've already mapped your neighborhood or hometown to great detail, there are many opportunities to improve OpenStreetMap's coverage of a particular topic throughout the country. Find an ongoing mapping project that interests you or delve deep on a long-term project such as TIGER fixup or social equity mapping.
The U.S. community is also spearheading several technical projects that welcome new contributors. OpenStreetMap Americana is a map style aimed at familiarity to Americans. OpenHistoricalMap is mapping the whole world just like OpenStreetMap, but throughout all of history.
